Tor.com: Tamora Pierce Writes Fantasy That Changes Lives

Last month, Meghan Ball at Tor.com wrote a wonderful, personal article about her experiences with Tamora’s books, and the ways in which they’ve made an impact.

Tamora Pierce should be a household name. We should all be crowded around our TVs every Saturday night watching The Song of the Lioness show on HBO. Her works should be considered a cultural touchstone that inspire generations. Prog rock bands should be creating epic concept albums based on her stories. There should be Funko Pops of Alanna of Trebond, Numair Salmalín, and Keladry of Mindelan.

But there aren’t. (At least, not yet.)

Thank you, Meghan, for the kind words!

Daja Named One of “Ten Empowering Female Characters in Children’s Books”

Daja gets some recognition from Guardian readers as she makes the list of Ten Empowering Female Characters in Children’s Books! Regarding her impact, Hannah Catteral says:

She has a strong sense of justice and hard work, and is always a champion for her friends. She apprentices to an older blacksmith, Frostpine, who teaches her skilled and magical metalwork, and eventually becomes a master of her craft.

In later books, as she grows older, she also falls in love with a woman, and this is treated as perfectly normal. Having grown up with Daja, her friends and their adventures, this was absolutely wonderful and unprecedented for childrens’ series at the time.

Tamora Pierce is One of “Five Great Audiobooks Read by the Author”

Tammy’s in great company at No. 2 (The Immortals and Circle of Magic Quartets) narrating as the Full Cast Audio Family performs the characters’ dialogue (including Bruce Coville as Niklaren Goldeye and Tammy’s husband Tim as Dedicate Crane, among other roles!), with Neil Gaiman (Ocean at the End of the Lane) at No. 1 – and Jenny Lawson (Furiously Happy), the late Christopher Hitchens (Hitch-22), and Seamus Heaney’s translation of the Old English classic Beowulf also on the list.

Recording Circle of Magic Audiobooks with Bruce Coville’s Full Cast Audio

In 2001 or 2002, I forget which, my friend and fellow writer Bruce Coville approached me about recording my Circle of Magic quartet with his new audio book company, Full Cast Audio. Because of my background in doing radio during the 1980s, I was thrilled to have the chance to get in front of a microphone again and to hear my characters given life by a group of good actors. There is no feeling quite like it. With movies and television, the studio’s choice of actors and visual details never quite matches the way anyone, particularly the author, imagined the story. With audio productions, though, the right actor can give the listener’s imagination an extra hook on which to hang her/his imagination, the extra boost that makes the book live in the listener’s mind.
